Jocelyn Petroni’s Top Tips For the Ultimate Nail Maintenance
For this week’s Lux list beauty, we are asking nail expert Jocelyn Petroni all the questions you want an answer to. From general tips to the colours she’ll be wearing this summer.
With beauty salons going back to standard practices, it is time to give our nails some TLC care. Coming out of months and months of an at-home life, there are two possible ways you and your nails will be feeling these days:
Option A – You and your nails are longer and stronger than ever. If that’s the case, you probably have been diligently taking care of them with at-home manis every week or fortnight, and we applaud you for that. Now you are more than ready to go back to your social agenda in pure spring blossom.
Option B – You and your nails didn’t have the best time, resulting in flaky and weak nails. Maybe even you have this not-so-good habit of biting your nails (I do it all time, I’m not proud of it, but it’s something I’m working to change) or have developed it during the lockdown.
If you feel seen with the latter, read carefully what one of the best manicurists in Sydney shared with us about healthy-looking nails, but also, if you want to keep up your nail game with some expert tips, we encourage you to keep reading.
She has also touched base on what will be the perfect summer manicure for her. Are you ready to follow Jocelyn’s advice?

General tips from your experience to have healthy and beautiful looking nails.
Always follow an inside out and holistic approach to beauty, including nails…..so much of nail health is determined by diet, so that is the first place to start. Eating foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and calcium is essential to promoting healthy nail growth. Supplements are also necessary to focus on optimal skin and nail health. I take Vida Glow’s marine collagen as part of my morning routine.
Externally it’s crucial to care for your nails with specialist treatment products and by having regular professional manicures. I advise my clients to use an at-home nail strengthener like Mavala’s Scientific K+ on and off as required, it’s a trusted product that bonds the three nail plates together and delivers results. It’s important to remember the general wear and tear that nails face daily, causing consistent micro-traumas to the nail. Wherever possible, take the care to protect nails through a topical protector OR by using gloves when using water or detergents.

What’s for you the manicure set everyone should own at home?
Having quality tools at home will give you nail confidence in between manicures. You will need a good quality emery board, a specific cuticle treatment product (to treat the nail and provide a well-groomed contour), a nail strengthener and a quality hand cream. Nails only look as good as the hands they are on – my indispensable, go-to hand cream is Chanel’s La Crème Main, a complete care product for hands and nails. Not only does it nourish, protect and visibly improve the texture and tone of hands, but nails are strengthened, and cuticles softened.

Favourite colours to wear for summer?
I love a naked manicure for summer, a no-polish look of healthy, gleaming nails. It’s one of the signature treatments at the salon. I’ve always been a fan of pretty pastels and love Mavala’s new Pastel Fiesta Collection and Chanel’s blush nude Organdi. A classic red never fails and gives hands and feet a pop of colour in the sunshine.
The Pastel Fiesta Collection is a sweet celebration of beauty and lightness with six beautiful shades inspired by nature.
