How To Tap Into Your Unconscious Mind

Within the depths of your being exists the unconscious and conscious realms, consisting of layers and dimensions beyond human understanding. Your unconscious is where dreams, the psyche, the shadow, senses, intuition, hidden beliefs and memories reside. In contrast, your conscious mind allows for clarity and understanding based on rational and logical thought and analysis. According to Carl Jung, the eminent Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, modern society operates predominantly within the conscious level of awareness, over-rationalizing life events to make sense of and having to prove the existence of life itself.

But what if there was more to life than what our conscious level of awareness can make sense of? What if there is a world inside of you waiting to be explored?

Due to the level of comfort, certainty, and control within the analytical mind, venturing into the unconscious can be mysterious, abstract, hidden, or frightening. Reflecting on the most challenging times of my life when I was in patterns of repeating toxic cycles or operating through fear, false beliefs or unresolved wounds, it’s no wonder why I kept experiencing continual loss and struggle at the same time, unable to make conscious decisions for deep self-reflection or gain new perspectives of myself to change the course of events. 

“It is a psychological rule that the brighter the light, the darker the shadow; in other words, the more rationalistic we are in our conscious minds, the more alive becomes the spectral world of the unconscious” ~ Carl Jung

This quote from Carl Jung highlights the concept of the shadow, a term he used to describe the hidden or repressed aspects of the psyche. Jung believed that the brighter and more rational the conscious mind becomes, the more pronounced and active our unconscious becomes. In other words, as you focus more on logic and reason, and suppress or deny the fears, desires, and instincts, they will naturally gain strength in the unconscious realm. This suggests that the conscious efforts to ignore or suppress certain aspects will only amplify their presence in the unconscious mind, influencing thoughts, emotions, perceptions, and behaviours. Exploring and integrating the unconscious elements is essential for achieving wholeness, and balance, and cultivating alignment with authenticity.

As the conscious mind has strengthened as a dominant force in modern society, a barrier between the conscious and unconscious can become quite strong, creating an unconscious behavioural mechanism of resistance and avoidance from venturing into the unknown aspects of self, and the relationship with dimensions of life and the Universe. 

Advanced consciousness, a term by Carl Jung, represents a heightened state of awareness that transcends the confines of the ego and taps into the deeper layers of the psyche. It is a state of consciousness characterized by profound insight, expanded perception, and a sense of interconnectedness with the collective unconscious and the broader cosmos.

In this state of advanced consciousness, you can experience a dissolution of the boundaries between the self and the other, the inner and the outer world. Jung believed that accessing this transcendent dimension of consciousness was essential for psychological growth, spiritual development, and individuation – the process of becoming whole and integrating the contrasting aspects of the self.

Advanced consciousness is often associated with moments of profound insight, mystical experiences, and encounters with the numinous or divine. It transcends rational thought and taps into a deeper, intuitive knowing that goes beyond the limitations of the egoic mind. In this state, you may experience a sense of unity with all existence, a heightened awareness of synchronicities and meaningful coincidences, and a profound sense of purpose and meaning in life.

By integrating the insights gained from advanced consciousness into your daily life, you can bridge the gap between the transcendent and the mundane. This integration process is central to the individuation journey, as it involves making conscious of the unconscious contents and arriving at a state of wholeness and authenticity.

A parallel with Carl Jung’s findings on advanced consciousness, you may be familiar with Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs – a psychological theory that categorizes human needs into five levels, arranged in a pyramid shape. At the top of the pyramid are self-actualization and transcendence. Self-actualization refers to the awareness of your full potential, including personal growth, creativity, and fulfillment of your unique talents and abilities. 

Transcendence, a concept added later by Maslow, involves reaching beyond the self to connect with something greater, such as spirituality, altruism, or the collective good, aligning with your highest aspirations and contribution to the greater good of humanity.

Steps for accessing the unconscious:

  1. Self-Reflection and Mindfulness: Engage in regular self-reflection practices such as meditation, journaling, or mindfulness exercises. Mindfulness can include cultivating awareness within the body, beliefs, emotions, and thoughts from a place of non-attachment or non-judgment to identify unconscious influences. These practices will help you become more aware, allowing you to identify areas for growth and self-awareness.
  2. Explore Symbolism, Myth, and Meaning: Exploring symbolism and myth unlocks hidden meanings in your experiences, opening pathways into the unconscious, and leading to personal growth and heightened conscious awareness. By delving into this realm, you gain insight into your unconscious desires and fears, enriching your life with deeper meaning and purpose.
  3. Observe The Belief System: The belief system is at the origin of unconscious mental, emotional, behavioural, and external patterns, sending signals of deeper motivations, perceptions, and reactions to life experiences. True and false beliefs are crucial for understanding limitations and patterns in your internal and external worlds. By observing trigger responses, common go-to habits, or patterns, you can address the origin of the beliefs residing within the unconscious.
  4. Dream Analysis: Dreams offer a glimpse into the meaning and symbolic messages from the unconscious. If you dream, keep a journal near your bed and record your dreams, exploring patterns, emotions, and meaning. You may even experiment with subconscious reprogramming exercises of affirmations and visualization techniques right before you fall asleep to integrate new beliefs and patterns into the unconscious. Over longer periods, you may notice changes or repeating patterns within your dreams, offering valuable insights into self-analysis and introspection.
  5. Cultivate Authenticity: Align with your true self by strengthening the connection with your values, heart, passions, and aspirations. Authenticity fosters self-actualization by allowing you to express your unique talents, creativity, and potential.
  6. Foster Meaningful Connections: Cultivate deep and meaningful relationships with others based on empathy, compassion, and mutual support. Connecting with others on an attentive level enhances your sense of connectedness and purpose, contributing to self-actualization and transcendence.
  7. Practice Gratitude and Service: Welcome a deep feeling and resonance with gratitude and generosity towards life, the Universe, and others. Expressing gratitude for the blessings in your life and engaging in acts of service or kindness towards others fosters a sense of interconnectedness and contributes to transcendence by aligning with something greater than the self. 

The path to advanced consciousness, self-actualization, or transcendence is not a linear process, but an expansive and multidimensional practice of continual self-awareness, introspection, and discipline. You may experience a sudden leap into an advanced state of consciousness followed by regression into previous patterns of unconscious limitations and restrictions. Rest assured, the more you explore through curiosity and compassion, the greater your relationship with the unconscious (and the Universe) will become.
