As winter in the Northern Hemisphere draws near, the cold-weary set their sights on southern escapes.
Enter Zuri Zanzibar, an idyllic retreat located on a 300-meter-long stretch of private beach where sunsets and the sea-foam green of the Indian Ocean reign. Here, on the colourful island of Zanzibar, 55 thatched-roof bungalows and villas are the height of refined and uncomplicated luxury.
Surrounded by a bounty of indigenous plants and foliage, the villas are an expression of African ethos and have been informed by an environmentally and socially sensitive approach to building, design, and operations.
The high-luxury experience features seven sunset-facing restaurants and bars, an infinity pool, a watersports centre, a vast spice garden, and now with the completion of a full spa and wellness program, the property is fully launched.
Fully opened September 2018, the 10-year passion project is the first Design Hotels™ member on the Tanzanian archipelago. Nestled on the prime west-facing Kendwa beach, Zuri Zanzibar takes its name from the Swahili word for ‘beautiful’ and borrows from a typical clustered village atmosphere.
Epitomizing modern-meets-traditional African design, the 55 thatched bungalows and villas were conceived by London- and Prague-based firm Jestico & Whiles. Private and protected, the villas peak from curtains of greenery, yet are placed over 13-acres so that each has ocean or garden views, with winding paths connecting to the many social spaces and environments. At every point of the process, the team behind the holistic property took ecological considerations and responsible tourism as the guiding principle. This means not only high-end respite but a stay deeply connected to its surroundings and the local community. And now with the addition of the Maua Wellness program, guests will benefit from an open-air gym and training facility, sunrise and sunset yoga, tailored fitness programming, and a meditation and massage area.
