We caught up with Karren Murrell, the founder of Karen Murrell to talk about natural lipsticks…
From product to packaging, Karen Murrell believes in natural all the way. Her packaging is printed with vegetable-based inks on sustainably sourced paper by an FSC-certified printing company. And the actual lipsticks are free from coal tar, carmine, triclosan, parabens, or mineral oils.
Karen, can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
From when I was a young girl, beauty, cosmetics and skincare have long been a passion and an ambition of mine. Inspired by my Nana Gwen. I fondly remember creative afternoons spent curiously exploring my Nana’s elaborate make-up collection. I began my career by cutting my teeth formulating skincare and during that time I saw a gap in the market for a natural lipstick that was environmentally friendly yet functionally as good as any top international brand. I adore combining my love of flowers and colour into a lipstick collection designed, just like nature, to inject colour into your day.
How did the idea behind your cosmetics brand Karen Murrell come about?
I started the business around 11 years ago because at that time there were no natural lipsticks around in the market. I wanted a natural lipstick that was as good or better than the typical cosmetic brands. When I was buying lipsticks they all had ingredients like Triclosan and dimethicone which I wanted to stray away from. Finding natural safer alternatives, women ingest 2kg of lipstick over a lifetime, so I wanted to create a product that looked good but did not have nasty chemicals or ingredients in order to do so. In doing so we became a leader in the natural lipstick field and continue to innovate and lead the way.
There seem to be an increasing demand from consumers looking for natural and organic beauty products, what’s your experience?
The demand for natural products is running across all sectors. As consumers evolve with the current trends of wanting to know what is in their products the histories, ethical sourcing, and benefits of the ingredients in the products they are using. Consumers are demanding more from the brands they consume.
Why, from your experience, is it more beneficial to use natural products?
I have used natural products throughout my life as my family have always lived organically. Whenever I use non-natural products I can instantly feel the difference in my skin. The long and short-term effects can be seen and felt when using natural vs not natural products in the condition of the skin with hydration, spots, pigmentation, and fine lines. The reason is clear natural is healthy, with natural products you see what you get. Similar to with food, if you eat processed foods every day you begin to feel awful on the inside when you eat fresh natural ingredients you instantly feel more energised and better, it is the same for the products you use on the outside. Our skin after-all is our biggest organ!
In terms of lipsticks, what are the key things consumers look for? And how are they achieved by using natural ingredients?
It must aesthetically look good and have a long-lasting effect, we use Candelilla wax which is yellow, and is celebrated in lipstick production for its hard, brittle, glossy, and slightly tacky properties making the lipsticks beautiful texture and long-lasting. We also use cinnamon which gives fuller, plumper lips. People are looking for hydration and non-drying products for this we use avocado oil which provides moisture, nourishment, and hydration. Our formula is perfected to cater to the demands of a natural conscious consumer.
You have a beautiful range of colours, what are the colour trends at the moment?
As we are in the midst of winter bold reds are becoming popular to bring colour to winter wardrobes, however, our nudes remain popular year-round with Karen Murrell 02 Cordovan Natural and Karen Murrell 05 Violet Mousse being our top online sellers the past few months.
Lastly, what are your best tips when it comes to keeping your lips hydrated and do you have a secret when it comes to applying lipstick for the perfect lips?
Drinking plenty of water is always the first step towards beautifully hydrated lips, followed by using lipsticks with non-drying properties. I always have 01 Moisture Stick with me for when my lips are feeling on the drier side to bring instant moisture and hydration back to them. A part of my nightly beauty regime is a lip scrub to remove dead skin, a cold flannel to remove the excess then 01 Moisture Stick to finish.
