The Islands of Tahiti is one of the top destinations for 2020 and here is why…

The Island of Tahiti has long been one of the most exotic and luxurious destinations in the world and with the New Year just around the corner, the perspective of a new and exciting destination to visit in 2020 is a thought frequented in the minds of intrepid travellers everywhere.  The Islands of Tahiti have long been renowned as the pinnacle of luxury (you can even rent your own island), boasting crystal clear waters, a plethora of activities and those over-water bungalows. As if you needed any more reasons to travel to the idyllic locations, here are five more, which will put The Islands of Tahiti at the top of your 2020 travel wish list…

Stone Fishing in The Island of Tahiti

A cultural phenomenon that takes place once every ten years, stone fishing involves ‘herding’ fish.  Locals beat the water with heavy stones that scare fish toward the shore. Here, fishermen in canoes drop a net and catch the fish in woven baskets.  Taking place in November on the islands of Taha’a and Maupiti, this ancient fishing ritual involved over 200 canoes and all residents of the islands participating.  With the whole community preparing for this event two days prior, along with each family weaving 10 meters of ‘rau’ (netting) and local cooks preparing the big ‘ma’a’ (traditional Tahitian meal) that will be served on the day, this event is one not to be missed.

Surfing The Islands

It’s been tipped to be the likely location to host the 2024 Olympic surfing event, so it comes as no surprise that The Islands of Tahiti are a premium location for surfers and enthusiasts alike to visit. Home to the world’s largest and most dangerous wave, Teapuho’o is located off the Southern end of Tahiti and is visited by thousands of tourists and big wave surfers each year.  For those on the lower end of the thrill-seeker scale, Tahiti produces a diverse range of waves suitable to all skill levels. Prior to the Olympians descending on The Islands of Tahiti, be the first to discover just why this paradisical slice of heaven is expected to be home to another iconic surfing event.

Overwater Accommodation

Overwater bungalows originated on The Islands of Tahiti over 50 years ago so if there’s only one place you ever experience them, it has to be here. With over 800 overwater bungalows, in a variety of sizes and locations, now is the time to tick this ultimate luxury off your bucket list. Bora Bora Pearl Resort and Spa, InterContinental Le Moana, Conrad Bora Bora Nui Resort and Spa and Le Maitai Polynesia are all great.

The Islands of Tahiti is Family-Friendly

Whilst accommodation option as incredible at the Tahitian overwater bungalows go hand-in-hand with island getaways, The Islands of Tahiti also offer a wide range of accommodation styles, whatever your budget and preference, If you’re looking for family0friendly options, guesthouses- known locally as pensions- offer a truly cultural and inexpensive experience.
