Korean beauty has been, and is, a rising trend. Why not come along on this exotic and refreshing journey of skincare?

Although skin care is something that is quite specific to each individual, there are many things to take away from this simple 10-step Korean Skin Care routine, which has a general effect of rejuvenation. After a long year, it’s time to bring a fresh, clean start to the new year – and new skin!

Step 1 for the night: Take makeup off with an oil cleanser

Gently massage the oil into dry skin, whilst lightly rubbing in circular motions, especially around the pores, to remove any impurities. Oil-based cleansers are recommended over water-based cleaners, as oil-based cleansers remove oil-based impurities, gained from products such as make-up and sun cream. It also expels the deep-rooted impurities in the skin, such as pollution and other dirt. Wipe off the oil with tissue or cotton pads.

Step 2: Wash/cleanse face with water and foam cleanser

There should be a thorough cleansing of the pores, to remove impurities which could cause acne. To open up pores, use lukewarm-hot water and wash off the dirt with cold water, to refresh and lighten up the skin.

Step 3: Exfoliate

Exfoliation could take place while face cleansing.

Gentle exfoliation should take place only 1-2 times a week, to remove dead skin cells and clean pores.

Step 4: Apply toner/mask pack

Toners help to prepare the skin by lightly balancing the pH levels of the skin before all the other products are applied so that these products can be absorbed more readily. Toner removes any residue which might be left from the cleanser. Using a small amount on a cotton pad and wiping any residue off is recommended.

Mask packs can be used in place of toner, lotion, essence.

Mask packs allow the face to fully absorb nutrients and moisturises the skin, freshening it for the day (or night) ahead. It is recommended that mask packs should be left on for only 10-15 minutes, then the excess moisture patted gently into the skin. If it is left on for any longer, the skin will not absorb any remaining product and nutrients will just be left wasted. The remaining product can be used for the neck if needed.

Step 5: Apply lotion

An extra layer of moisture.

Step 6: Apply essence

Light and refreshing, there are many different types of essences and, indeed, many different aspects of what essences help to achieve. There may be anti-ageing, balancing, hydrating and even complexion-enhancing essences – it is best to choose one that is specifically suited to the certain skin type.

Step 7: Apply day cream

A layer of moisture and thick cream, which hydrates and creates a barrier to the skin.

Step 8: Apply eye cream

Suitable for rejuvenating the eyes and for aiding dark-circles/eye-bags. Gently pat the product around the eye with the ring finger, the weakest finger – it is better not to apply too much pressure around the eyes since it is a sensitive area.

Step 9: Apply sun cream

UV rays can be extremely damaging – this step is highly recommended, even when staying indoors on a lazy day!

Step 10: Apply make-up base – some products may include SPF in the make-up base

The make-up base is a sort of primer, which prepares the skin for make-up. There are different coloured bases, which are again useful for each type of skin.

Step 11: Apply makeup, if needed

Following these simple steps will surely make one’s skin glow. The key to great, healthy skin is moisturisation and care, with the right products to match specific skin types. With a healthy routine and lifestyle, what a great start to the new year!
