The Siam Hotel Review, Bangkok: an exquisite black and white beauty celebrating Thai heritage and the jazzy art deco-era.
The Siam Hotel’s Location
The Siam Hotel, a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, benefits from an unbeatable location right on the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok’s Royal Dusit District. Situated right on the fringe of the historic heart of the city, the hotel is relatively far from downtown Bangkok (which is part of its unique selling point) however, the stunning luxury urban resort still offers easy and fast access to the city’s main attractions via the hotel’s private riverboat.
The Siam Hotel’s Design
This multi-award-winning hotel successfully blends heritage-style luxury with Art Deco features mixed with classic Thai influences. The black and white colour palette used throughout the hotel offers the perfect backdrop to the impressive green plants in the lobby creating a sense of an urban jungle.
Designed by architect Bill Bensley, the hotel’s smooth lines and geometric shapes add to the Art Deco vibe, whilst the beautiful Thai antiques and artefacts (some dating back to the 16th century including the Buddha statues) placed throughout the hotel gives the hotel its heritage feel. The spacious 39 suites and villas create a sense of an intimate boutique hotel. Huge efforts are made to offer guests complete privacy and at times it feels like you have the hotel all to yourself (whilst running on high occupancy) which is a testament to the impeccable service and organisation behind every guest’s stay.
The Suites and Villas
To get an idea of the impressive size of the rooms at The Siam Hotel, the basic room category starts at no less than 80sqm (!) and is, actually, a suite (there’s 16 of them to be exact which are all individually designed with original artworks and antiquities). The next step up is the Nam Suite (90sqm) followed by the Riverview Suite (100sqm). The Pool Villas boast 100 sqm and Connie’s Cottage 160 sqm.
The spacious suite 314 has dark wooden floors and crisp white walls which are tastefully decorated with colourful and fun vintage movie posters, framed old black and white photos and news clippings. Antique movie equipment is placed around the room including an old camera. The super-sized king bed is placed in the middle of the room under the lofty ceiling and large chandelier. The separate sitting room has its own TV, a mini-bar and coffee and tea making facilities. The centrepiece of the large bathroom is a deep-soak tub. There’s also a separate shower room. The hotel has adopted a no-single use plastic policy and uses large refillable containers for bath amenities rather than small plastic bottles. Plastic water bottles have been replaced with refillable glass bottles as well as aluminium bottles which can be refilled at various water stations around the hotel. All suites and villas have complimentary Wi-Fi and guests can also enjoy complimentary international and local calls via a smartphone.
The Breakfast at The Siam Hotel
The breakfast is served in the Deco Bar and Bistro which, with its serene view of the Chao Phraya, is the perfect way to start the day. The a la carte menu is extensive with a wellness focus including Keto-friendly dishes, fresh detox juices and an impressive variety of eggs (Thai and Western-style). The additional buffet is not short of yoghurts, cold cuts, fresh fruit, pastries, and bread.
The Service and Facilities
The service at The Siam is flawless and formal, but far from stuffy. Guests are appointed their own butler who is on call for anything you might need. There are restaurants, a bar, café, library, a screening room (yes an in-house cinema), an antique gallery, and a conservatory. The spa offers various treatments including traditional Thai massage and a steam room and sauna. Perhaps one of the most unique facilities is The Sak Yant tattoo studio.
The 23-meter riverside infinity pool is perfect for morning or afternoon laps and the pool bar has a smart seating area where iced-water, a refreshing face mist spray, and towels are provided after your swim. For guests looking to work up a sweat, there is a fully-equipped fitness studio as well as a Muay Thai boxing ring (!). Trainers are available per request for Thai boxing classes.
The hotel encourages guests to explore the city and the complimentary scheduled shuttle boat between The Siam and Bangkok’s central Sathorn pier Portier Mobile is an excellent way of transport and also a great way to see Bangkok from a different side. There are plenty of stops along the river including Steve’s Cafe, a popular riverside restaurant serving up delicious local Thai dishes.
