SARONG Restaurant in Seminyak hits the mark with its unique Asian fusion cuisine.

Sarong Restaurant has been around for over ten years and is still regarded as one of the best restaurants in Bali. With its premium location, an interesting blend of pan-Asian dishes, delicious cocktails, and beautiful decor, Sarong is a restaurant worth visiting, but make sure to make a reservation well in advance (it fills up quickly).

Sarong’s entire menu is designed and owned by Chef Will Meyrick who takes inspiration from his travels around India, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. Expect an interesting blend of additional flavours from Japan, India and, of course, Indonesia to top off the unique Asian fusion kitchen.

The restaurant’s decor hasn’t changed since it opened ten years ago and is warm, elegant and designed for comfort. The plush sofas and chairs are comfortable and the large dark wooden tables, beautiful bar area and rich fabrics add to the elegance. Although the restaurant has one hundred covers, it still feels intimat and cosy.

To start of the evening there’s an extensive cocktail list. Nano Crush (vodka, crushed lychees, lime, strawberry pure, passionfruit, cranberry and apple juice) is a fruity favourite on the menu as well as Spirituality (Pimm’s gin infused with berries, Chmbord vodka, watermelon, fresh strawberries and mint). Another refreshing cocktail is the Pina Basil Smash (rum, basil, pineapple, lime and sugar).

The service is attentive, friendlly, helpful and professional. With so many different dishes on the menu, the Tuna Tataki  with daikon, pickled ginger, basil flower, and yuzu Thai basil dressing stands out as one of the most popular starters. The dish is incredibly flavoursome and comes in four pieces to share.

For the main course the Red Snapper Methi Mutter Malai, simmered in green chilli, cashew nut paste garam masala, kasoori methi and green peas is amazing. The fish is cooked to perfection and the cashew nut flavour adds an extra layer of flavour. For those who find Asian food too spicey, the slow braised beef in aromatic masala, with shaved coconut, curry leaf, mustard seeds, served with hoppers is a great option and is served with jasmine rice and garlic Naan bread. Chef Meyrick’s believes that ecological farming results in better tasting food. As a result, all vegetables are organic and locally sourced including the Tandoori broccoli with cheddar, cashew nut, pistachio, cumin and yoghurt which is crispy and light. If you still have room for dessert (the portions are quite big) the coconut ice cream served with white chocolate parfait and passionfruit is deliciously sweet and perfect to share.

Referred to as Indonesian fine-dining, Sarong is one of the best places to enjoy a memorable dinner whilst in Seminyak. The food, drinks, and atmosphere make this a fantastic restaurant for a romantic dinner, family gatherings (there are large table configurations) or for celebrating special occassions.
