Anja Berends is a modern and contemporary artist from The Netherlands specialising in creating art pieces for boutique hotels. On her website, she showcases her portfolio of colourful artwork to lift any spirit. We caught up with her to find out what it is like to paint for hotel clients.

Was there a pivotal moment when you decided to follow your path as an artist?

I started to draw during primary school. My grandfather was an artist specialising in landscapes and portraits, more classic art, and was an early inspiration for me.

I continued to paint and after I moved on to a corporate career I started to take evening art classes to further develop my painting skills. However, it wasn’t until my two children were out of the nest that I could focus on my painting 100% and turn it into a profession.

Tell us about your collaboration with hotels

I have always focused on our modern lifestyle. In my opinion, having modern art in your home (or hotel room) is vital to our well being.

Modern art is a key piece of furniture for many reasons and is sometimes, unfortunately, being neglected in comparison to other objects.

An interesting quote about having art in your home/hotel room that stands out to me, “You would never put fake books on your bookshelf, so why would you put fake art on your walls?”

In my opinion, modern art Creates Mood, Makes memories, Adding a personal touch to a room. It also fosters creativity and inspiration.

When decorating a hotel choosing wall art should involve pieces that show off the lifestyle and ambience the hotel would like to create. Of course, the artwork should match the current architecture and interior design. What I love when it comes to working with hotels is how modern art can immediately bring flair, personality and style to each room which, as for an artist, is incredibly rewarding.

Which artist of the past would you most like to meet?

I absolutely adore Picasso and as a Dutch lady, I have to of course mention Rembrandt.

What’s your favourite art gallery in the world?

Guggenheim in New York!

As an artist, I love visiting art galleries around the world as well as show openings. Going to galleries, talking with artists, collectors to gather more knowledge and further education myself when it comes to art is a big part of my life. It is interesting actually, after a while you start to see art themes in subject matter, colours and concepts. I always try to play with moods, composition and placement in a room when creating my artwork.
