Located only 15 minutes from Marbella and a 45-minute drive from Malaga airport this blissful wellness retreat offering yoga, detox and unique holistic treatments is located in the midst of nature surrounded by the Sierra de las Nieves Nature Park and Biosphere Reserve and can easily be reached from Europe’s major cities.

Driving down to Shanti Som Wellbeing Retreat on a small road takes you through a green forest with pine trees and before entering the gates to the property there is a small spring with fresh mountain water to drive over.

Upon arrival, the friendly and helpful staff provides me with a tour of the property which has been carefully constructed using local materials following Feng-Shui. The building with its Balinese architecture creates an East-Asia feel with wooden ceilings, Buddha statues and a traditional yoga shala. With only 14 rooms this is an intimate boutique hotel creating a warm and friendly atmosphere among both guests and staff and the resort’s motto is to treat clients as family and provide complete relaxation.

The wellbeing retreat is available for short-term stays, drop-ins for a night and up to several weeks although most guests tend to stay between 5-7 nights.

With carefully designed detox, yoga, weight loss and fitness programs focusing on delivering a personalised service with customised treatments for each guest the retreat is particularly popular among UK, Dutch and Belgium guests. My personalised schedule for my two days includes yoga and a back massage.

The room

The rooms all have individual names such as knowledge, wellness, enlightenment and my room is the ‘love’ room which is a spacious double room with a large private balcony with a beautiful mountain view. The large double bed is comfortable and the bathroom has a separate shower with amenities from RITUALS. There are water and herbal teas in the room and housekeeping services the room daily.

Treatments

I am positively surprised to learn about the wide range of treatments available and the philosophy which is based on that true beauty and wellbeing comes from deep within. Apart from traditional treatments such as massages, facials, body treatments, hand and foot therapy as well as pedicure and manicure there are alternative treatments including soul readings, kinesiology therapy and Reiki healing.

The back and shoulder massage is fantastic. During 30 minutes any build up stress and muscle tension in all areas around the shoulders and across the back is being released.

Popular treatments also include Lomi Lomi Hawaiian massage, hydradermie, age summun lifting and aromatic facials. The most popular body treatment is the lemon & ginger scrub which is a salt body scrub which exfoliates and removes dead skin cells.

There is also a sauna and steam bath which can be booked 60 minutes prior to using it and is frequently used after yoga and gym classes

For guests who wish to explore the local area, there are hikes and horse riding activities available additional charge.

Yoga and Gym

There are two yoga classes offered daily with the morning class being held at 8.30am and the afternoon class at 5.30pm. The yoga studio is bright and spacious with great yoga mats, props, straps and blankets. The daily classes are either Vinyasa Flow or Hatha Flow and are adapted for each client’s level.

The gym which is open between 11am – 7pm is small but has everything you need for an all-around workout including a treadmill, static bike, power plate and a multiuse machine.

Restaurant

The Asian-fusion restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The breakfast is served between 9-10.30am and includes a continental breakfast buffet as well as tea, coffee and juices. Lunch is served between 1.30 – 4pm and includes a starter and a main followed by a dessert or tea/coffee. Dinner starts at 7.30pm and is also a two-course meal with two drinks included (including a cheeky wine for those who aren’t on a full detox). The food is rustic and tasty including soups, salads and woks.

A nice touch is the ‘solo traveller’s table’ which is a roundtable where people travelling on their own can sit in case they feel like interacting with other guests.

Who is this retreat for?

This is where guests can relax, detox and restore energy in a tranquil and beautiful setting with the comfort and luxury of a hotel. This is the perfect retreat for anyone looking to ‘get away from it all’ and who are interested in a custom-tailored detox/yoga/wellbeing plan. Shanti Om is always very flexible with dates and number of days guests can stay which is helpful for anyone with a busy schedule who needs some flexibility.  Expect to leave refreshed and totally relaxed.
